Five ADMM+ Ministers to Visit Vietnam in Oct
Defense ministers of the U.S., China, Japan, India and South Korea will make official visits to Vietnam in mid-Oct while attending the ASEAN Defense Ministerial Meeting plus (ADMM+) here.
The countries, along with Australia, New Zealand and Russia, are the eight partners to the ASEAN Defense Ministerial Meeting plus (ADMM+) which is initiated by Vietnam as current chairman of the bloc.
So far this year, all the eight partners have agreed to join the first ADMM+ which will open in Hanoi on Oct 11, the Vnexpress.net online newspaper cited Vice Head of General Political Department of the People’s Army of Vietnam Nguyen Tuan Dung as saying.
As the host, Vietnam is now promoting references to the three-day event with ten ASEAN members and the eight-partner group in order to reach the highest consensus, Dung noted.
Vietnamese leaders affirmed the ADMM+ would play as an expanded regional forum which mainly focuses on coping with security challenges.
Analysts and media, however, observe with concentration to the forthcoming gathering of top-notch defense officials in Hanoi amid the regional and global security structure are making noticeable changes.
Observers said Washington-Beijing relations have showed signs of being warmer again after a number of tensions relating to economy and security since early this year, particularly the issue of “interests on East Sea” reminded by Secretary of State Hillary late July at the Hanoi-based ARF meeting.
Beijing is now engaged in a row over ship seize with Japan. (vnexpress.net)
