Developing Lam Son Sugar Cane Material Zone

A span of 15 years of combining agriculture with industry and restructuring crops has revitalised a deserted barren hilly land. A sugar cane zone which spreads over 112 communes and four plantations in 11 northwest districts of Thanh Hoa province helps local people escape poverty and get riches.

The Lam Son Sugar Association has become a laudable successful example of combining industry and agriculture. In the first quarter of 2010, the Association had nearly 800 members who are experienced, capable, loyal and influential sugarcane growers.

Members are excellent owners who are always eager to apply new techniques to intensive farming to boost productivity, value and quality of products. This is a core force of the Lam Son sugar production in both the past and the future.

Lam Son has grown from a self-subsistent agriculture-based to a commercial agriculture- and industry-based area. Sugar production creates nearly 30,000 jobs for 10,000 households. The number of well-of households increased sharply while the proportion of poor households reduced to less than 8 %. Living conditions of one million farmers have been rapidly improved.

On February 6, 1999, the Prime Minister signed the Decision No. 1133/QD-TTg to transform Lam Son Sugar Company into Lam Son Sugar Joint Stock Corporation, making it a pioneer of the Vietnamese sugar industry to go public. Particularly, for the first time in history, Vietnamese farmers become true owners of industrial factories. Then, the cooperation and relationship of workers and farmers strengthened in quality.
From February 17, 2003, the Thanh Hoa People’s Committee piloted a joint venture by setting up Lam Son - Sao Vang Co., Ltd under the Enterprise Law. In June 2006, the Prime Minister issued the Decision No. 138/QD - TTg to approve the establishment and the Thanh Hoa People’s Committee decided to transform the company into a Lam Son - Sao Vang Two-member Limited Liability Company.

In the 2010 -2011 crop, the company starts a joint venture with Cam Chau co-operative in Cam Thuy district where farmers contribute land and the company contributes techniques and capitals.
