The World Trade Organization (WTO)’s panel started judging Vietnam’s lawsuit against the U.S. imposition of antidumping taxes on frozen shrimp in Geneva of Switzerland on Oct 20, state media said Thursday.

The panel, with three members appointed by WTO’s Director General Pascal Lamy late last July, heard and questioned about the two parties’ arguments during the first day of the trial.

Vietnam, the petitioner, strove to require legitimate interests for their shrimp exporters whose shrimp has been groundlessly imposed high antidumping duties at the U.S. market.

Meanwhile, the U.S., the defendant, tried to protect their shrimp breeders, arguing that Vietnamese low-price shrimp has caused bad impacts on its shrimp industry.

The trial will continue today (Oct 21).

Vietnam submitted its lawsuit documents against the U.S. on Aug 20, after the two parties failed to reach any consensus for the controversial issues in consultations in Mar 2010.

The panel is expected to give its final conclusion to concerned parties late Feb 2011, six months after receiving the lawsuit documents. (VietnamPlus)
