The Italian government has funded EUR3 million for Vietnam to assist the local small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in sharpening their capacity and competitive edges, the government said on its website.

Over 100 Italian firms and business associations will partake in the project which was implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Confederation of Italian Industries.

The UNIDO will help separate Vietnamese SMEs in clusters based on their sector and geography, Gerardo Patacconi, UNIDO Senior Industrial Development Officer said, adding that this model has been carried out successfully in industrialized countries.

In the project’s first phase, UNIDO works out SME clusters and chooses 3 pilot clusters with a high development potential, including one in textile and garment, others in footwear and leather processing sector, and wood processing and furniture.

In the second phase, the selected clusters will receive technical assistance relating clusters from Italian government through technology transfers and other kind of support.

The third phase includes promotions of long-term cooperation and agreements among Vietnamese and Italian associations, with an aim to increase the local SMEs’ production and trading capacity. (news.gov.vn)
