Vietnam’s central localities of Thua Thien-Hue, Danang and Quang Nam are planning to set up a joint tourism representative office in Japan this year as part of a program to attract more tourists.

The three provinces have received support from an organization in Japan, investors, travel firms and Vietnam Airlines for the plan as it is expected to help promote the entire central region as a destination for Japanese tourists.

“We want to open the office soon because Japan is among the important markets for us,”
Nguyen Quoc Thanh, deputy director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Thua Thien-Hue Province, said.

If the plan succeeds, this will be the first representative office of the local tourism industry in Japan, as the Vietnamese tourism now has no overseas office, Thanh added.

With four World Heritage sites, the central region of Vietnam is an attractive tourism destination for foreign visitors, including those from the sun-rising nation.

The Southeast Asia country attracted 442,089 Japanese holidaymakers in 2010, up 24% from a year earlier. It aims to receive one million travelers from Japan in 2015. (STD)
