Fruit Exports to Rise 10% This Year
Vietnam is forecast to gain an export turnover of US $500 million from fruits and vegetables this year, up 10% over last year, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
The country earned US $302 million from exporting fruits and vegetables in the first half of 2011, up 32.5% year-on-year, due to the higher quality of the products.
The US this year imported Vietnamese rambutans for the first time, while the country is expected to export mangos to New Zealand for the first time in 2012.
This year, the volume of dragon fruits exported to the US, Japan and the Republic of Korea will double to 2,600 tons.
According to the Cultivation Department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the southern region has some 22 fruit and vegetable processing facilities, accounting for 45% of the country’s total, with combined annual capacity of 170,160 tons.
Vietnam is establishing more concentrated material zones that meet VietGAP standard (Good Agricultural Practice).
