The US Seafood Association has announced the list of 10 seafood products which were most favoured in the country in 2010, of which pagaius fish (tra and basa fishes) was ranked ninth, up one place from 2009.
2009 was the first year tra and basa fishes were named in the list at tenth position, with an average consumption of 0.78 kilograms per person, while in 2010 the figure stepped up to 0.89 kilograms per person.
Specifically, tra and basa fishes are amongst four seafood types with increasing consumption from the previous year, along with tilapia, tuna and gadidae, while six other types saw a decrease in consumption.
The Vietnam Seafood Exporters and Processors Association reported that the US is the largest tra and basa export market of Vietnam. In the first seven months of 2011, Vietnam's tra and basa exports to the US reached 46,000 tonnes, valued at US$161.2 million, representing a two-fold increase compared to the same period last year.
