The three-session forum, chaired by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, drew the participation of 180 local and foreign delegates and speakers from 48 ASEM countries and international organisations.
Addressing at the forum, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh said: Green growth is the solution for the world to overcome daunting challenges of economic crisis, population boom, exhaustion of natural resources, a decline in biodiversity, environmental pollution, and climate change. In the context that countries are interdependent, the sustainable, green growth model is expected by all nations.
In fact, this model has been initially implemented in some countries in European Union and Japan and they have made effective outcomes. Deputy Prime Minister Ninh hopes the forum will promote and direct green growth policies of Asian and European continents. Through the forum, Vietnam affirms its determination with other ASEM member countries to promote green growth model with the aim of jointly acting towards the green process where ASEM is the nucleus for the green process of world economies. Particularly, in the context of global economic crisis, pressures of environmental degradation and pollution, depletion of natural resources, and climate change challenges, the green growth model is catching increasing interest of countries. Green growth consists of various activities, including sustained production, sustained consumption, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
Mr Nguyen Minh Quang, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, added that although the green growth model has been initially deployed with encouraging results, it is now being carried out some developed countries with strong financial resources and advanced scientific - technological levels.
Therefore, in addition to presentations on green growth initiatives and models and sustainable development, experiences in institutional production, policy and legal corridor to step up pros and cons of green growth for specific nations, particularly those with limited financial advantage, science, and technology

Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, requested all forum members to deliver the message of upcoming actions needed to be done in all aspects and at all levels, quickly form institutions and enhance international governance to immediately global mechanisms like REDD+ and Green Climate Fund, build and issue suitable green growth policies and mechanisms in line with global trends and global institutions to encourage the participation of non-governmental organizations and the business community. Especially, countries with scientific - technological competence necessarily boost supports for training and development of human resources specialised in green economy, green growth for countries with lower development levels to jointly act towards green economies, green growth and sustainable development.
As one of 26 ASEM founding members, in the past 15 years, Vietnam has made important contributions to the forum like hosting ASEM 5 Summit, proposing initiatives in strengthening ASEM cooperation in culture, education, health, transportation and energy security. And, the ASEM Green Growth Forum, with the theme “Jointly acting towards green economies,” reconfirms the roles, contributions and initiatives of Vietnam in ASEM, thus practically contributing to ASEM’s joint efforts in sharing information and planning experience, implementing green growth policies and enhancing cooperation in this field.
