At a press conference on the 5th anniversary since UNESCO recognised My Son Towers and Hoi An ancient town as international cultural heritages, Ms. Ho Thi Thanh Lam, Vice-Chairperson of Quang Nam People’s Committee, said that the festivals to be organised on August 26-29, 2004 will not only mark the achievement of heritage preservation but also promote the pride of Quang Nam people.
Mr. Tran Van Phi, deputy head of the Quang Nam Culture and Information Department announced the programme, detailing its festivals and features, such as the “Heritage path of the Central Region”, “Vietnam-Japan cultural and art exchanges”, Choi song, Gong music, traditional art performances and Quang Nam gastronomy.
New tourist products of Quang Nam will be introduced to visitors. The “Hoi An night life” event between 7pm and 12pm will take place on Saturday evenings with 300 performers in all streets. Traffic-free streets on Saturdays and Sundays, one-day tours of craft villages for foreign tourists, working and lunching with the locals, coral tours and fishing, and tours of Cham Island and Bird-net Island are all included in the new programme.
In 1977-1999, Quang Nam received some 250,000 tourists. After the recognition of its cultural heritages, the number of visitors increased by 30 per cent. In 2004, one million tourists are expected to visit Quang Nam. Currently, the province has 67 hotels with 3,000 rooms and 42 more tourist projects are planned. During the festivals, the room and service rates will be reduced by 20 per cent. These concerted efforts by the local people and authorities will certainly attract more visitors and the “Two heritages, one destination” will be a success.
