Dr Doan Duy Khuong, Vice President of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), hosted a reception with a Palestinian business delegation led by Mr Saadi Salama Altumaizi, Palestinian Ambassador to Vietnam. This was the first visit to Vietnam by a Palestinian business delegation with the purpose of attending and looking for partners at the Vietnam International Trade Fair (Vietnam Expo 2012). Visitors included the Hebron Chamber of Commerce and Industry and businesses operating in garment, textile, beverage, furniture, food, electrical appliance and sport equipment industries.
On the sideline of the meeting, Vietnam Business Forum held an an interview with Mr Abdelhhaleem M.H. Shawar Tamimi, Vice President of the Hebron Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Dang Yen reports.
Could you talk about which fields of Palestinian businesses want to cooperate with Vietnamese partners?
First of all, I would like to affirm that this trip to Vietnam clearly expresses our purpose and desire to further promote economic cooperation relations between the two countries. On the basis of this visit, we will explore possibilities and opportunities of building joint investment projects between Vietnam and Palestine.
Currently, we import a lot of commodities from many countries in the world and we are looking to import Vietnam’s strong products like seafood, agricultural products (rice, pepper and coffee), IT products, industrial products, apparel and footwear. Meanwhile, we hope to export fruits, olive oil, dates and natural construction stone to Vietnam.
VCCI has established many business councils with various countries in the world. So, would you be kind enough to share your desire for a cooperation mechanism on the prospective formation of a Vietnam - Palestine Business Council?
We hope for and propose the establishment of the Vietnam - Palestine Business Council with the purpose of forming an information and legal base and serving as a direct bridge for companies of the two countries to search for information and partners, as well as functioning as a forum for them to exchange ideas and experiences to further consolidate, and strengthen trade and investment ties between the two states.
In addition, we have many appropriate cooperation initiatives based on the abilities of the two countries. Hence, through the Council’s activities and on the basis of Palestinian experienced human resources, Palestinian businesses will realise initiatives with cooperation and joint ventures with Vietnamese companies or direct investment into Vietnam.

Palestine is a geographically, politically and culturally unique market. Do you have any advice for Vietnamese businesses that want to make inroads into the Palestinian market?
Currently, the Palestinian economy is still in difficult condition and it has to import many goods from other countries around the world. But, Vietnamese businesses should not falter before the challenges Palestine is facing if they want to do business in our country. I can confirm that on the basis of the bilateral long-term traditional friendship relations, Palestine wants broader cooperation with Vietnam and pledges to create the most favourable opportunities for Vietnamese products to gain ground in the Palestinian market.
Besides, we have many products you are importing from other countries. Hence, we are trying to find mechanisms and solutions to export these products to Vietnam and hope for Vietnamese facilitation and cooperation with us in return. For its part, Palestine will also support and select Vietnam’s products if it has products we are importing from other countries.
