InvestMENT in education: creating vital resources for development

By the end of the 2003–2004 academic year, the education-training system of Da Nang city comprises all education levels from pre-school to tertiary education. There are 169 kindergartens, 159 primary and secondary schools, 8 training colleges, 43 foreign language-informatics centres, 45 vocational training centres, five member colleges of Da Nang University (the Polytechnic, the Pedagogy College, the Foreign Languages College, the Economic College, and the Technology College) and the people-founded Duy Tan University.

Outstanding projects in 2003-2004

Da Nang’s education-training system has implemented the educational development strategy for each level of education for the 2001-2010 period with specific plans and solutions. Pre-school education planning during this period has been completed with capital of VND68 billion; the network of secondary schools has been built using VND40-68 billion; and the program of IT application during the 2001-2005 period has been successfully introduced employing capital of VND25 billion. In the 2004-2006 plan for capital mobilisation, each secondary school will be equipped with one IT room of 20-30 computers. The education-training sector of Da Nang city has also developed the Edunet project with investment of VND19 billion.

Further Accomplishments

The pre-school education has seen encouraging development in both scope and scale. The network of secondary schools has met the demand for learning and is fully capable of completing the plan for universalisation of secondary education by 2007. The entire city has met the criterion of illiteracy elimination.

Thanks to concerted investment efforts in education, the majority of the city’s pupils have been provided with good teaching and learning conditions, and the general education level has been significantly improved. The proportion of good and excellent pupils and of graduates from various educational levels reflects the greater focus on quality rather than quantity. Most notably, in 2004, a 12th-grade pupil of Da Nang city was awarded the Bronze Medal at the Physics International Examination in South Korea.

Professional training in Da Nang has been steadily strengthened and developed. The training scope of professional colleges has significantly increased compared with previous years. At present, the city has 11 professional training colleges, of which 7 are State-founded.

In order to successfully realise its objectives, Da Nang’s education-training sector has put forth inter-related solutions. These include expanding the education network, developing the scope of education and training, diversifying training models, promoting numerous funding sources and effective use of funding, accelerating educational socialisation, building linkages between secondary schools, professional training colleges and universities in the city, and enhancing international cooperation in education and training.
