Gov’t Appreciates Int’l Donors’ Support
The Vietnamese Government appreciates international donors’ support for the development of Vietnam’s central provinces in the recent times, said Deputy PM Hoang Trung Hai.
The Deputy PM made the remark at the 2012 mid-term Consultative Group (CG) Meeting for Vietnam under the theme “Dialogues with Central provinces”, which opened in Quang Tri Province on June 5.
The Vietnamese Government has been implementing a series of policies to make the central region become a dynamic economic area, guarantee economic and social goals as well as social and human development indexes, he said.
International donors have launched a number of programs to help the region upgrade economic and social infrastructure, reduce poverty, prevent flood, reduce calamity and protect the environment here.
The region accounts for 20 percent of the country’s total population but barely 14 percent of its GDP and often hit by natural disasters and climate change.
During the meeting, representatives of 14 Central provinces, managers and donors will figure out new development measures for this region.
Vietnam’s poverty reduction policies have been carried out across the country, giving priority for mountainous, island, border, coastal and rural areas, said World Bank's Country Director to Vietnam Victoria Kwakwa.
World Bank’s reports show that Vietnam has made impressive achievements in poverty reduction and sustainable development. The poverty rate dropped to below 10 percent in 2010 from 58 percent in 1993.
