The Vietnam National Environment Administration under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment recently held a meeting to collect opinions for the draft decision in lieu of the Prime Minister’s Decision 71/2008/QD-TTg dated May 29, 2008 on making of deposits for environmental rehabilitation and restoration in mineral extraction.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment appraised and approved 54 environmental rehabilitation and restoration projects with a total deposit of VND650 billion since 2008, of which 13 projects valued at VND143 billion were involved in environmental restoration in coalmining, seven projects worth VND300 billion were engaged in environmental restoration and rehabilitation in iron and nickel mining, and 18 projects worth VND100 billion were involved in environmental restoration and rehabilitation in quarrying.

Thus, after nearly three years of enforcing Decision No. 71/2008/QD-TTg, management, collateralisation, improvement and restoration of environment have gradually improved. Organisations and individuals are more responsible in mineral extraction, environmental protection, improvement and restoration. Total deposits exceeded VND1,000 billion.

But until now, the decision has exposed shortcomings and obstacles in deployment. Therefore, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment recommended amendments to this ruling to promote effective mineral extraction in Vietnam.
