5:31:53 PM | 7/26/2012

This is one of the two primary topics of discussion at the 8th CIO Summit & Awards 2012 held recently in Hanoi by International Data Group (IDG) and CEO & CIO Club.
In reality, technology plays a very important role for innovation within enterprises, especially in banking industry. It can provide high-quality user experience through banking services like internet and mobile banking. Furthermore, it is also known as the drivers for next generation business offering differentiators. At present, computer savvy customers continue their technology consumption and their need for immediate responses to their requests. So, questions for chief information officers (CIO) are: How executives see technology as an innovation enabler to business competitiveness and why CIOs need to focus on business results through technology in order to support company objectives.

At the conference, executives, top-notch professionals from largest Vietnamese and Southeast Asia companies and organisations also offered multidimensional perspectives on such issues as current pressures and concerns of CIOs of different industries; modern development infrastructure in technology era, new technology solutions for organisations and enterprises.

Commenting on changes in current economic context, Mr Peter Sharples, Advisor to Cloud, Virtualisation and Service Automation for Asia Pacific & Japan, CA Technologies Corp, said: The current information technology booming and transformation are changing the business environment. Inadaptable businesses will confront certain difficulties when they develop. They must grasp such changes and apply IT to their operations. The presence of cloud computing also has certain effects on IT industry in general and on operations of enterprises in particular. These impacts can be seen from two angles, positive and negative. Clearly positive aspects are fastness, convenience, easy accessibility and immediate application to operations of enterprises. In the future, these technologies will be widely applied in Vietnam to offer best benefits to businesses. He said Vietnam is a good market for IT development and application. In the short and medium term, IT application in general and cloud computing in particular within enterprises will develop rapidly. However, cloud computing also raises concerns over management, security and safety. Enterprises should prepare very thorough plans rather than take it in a hurry. This will put them at peril.

Specially, in cloud computing world, businesses can easily search data sources and select from a list from IT departments. Most cloud services are commercialised to bring attractive savings to customers while supplying more stringent IT configuration standards.

Highlighting the current roles of CIOs, Mr Le Thanh Tam, CEO of IDG ASEAN, said: A CIO must have qualities: strategic vision, organisational capacity, leadership, innovation and creativity. He attached special importance to breakthroughs and innovations of information technology projects the CIO has deployed successfully. CIOs now need to improve strategic vision, organisational capacity, leadership, innovation, and creativity. Thus, CIO evaluating and ranking criteria are not only limited to candidates’ influences in their businesses but also in their contributions to the community and society.

Ms Hazel Tan, Regional Business Manager of DCIM (Data Centre Infrastructure Management) Software for ASEAN, Hong Kong, Taiwan and South Korea, Schneider Electric Group, said: IT is increasingly uniting senior business executives and researchers to boost business development.
