Vietnam exported about 4.6 million tonnes of rice in the first seven months of 2012, worth USD2.1 billion, reported the Vietnam Food Association.

VFA President Truong Thanh Phong said that rice exports over the past few months met difficulties, but the target of exporting 7 million tonnes of rice in 2012 could be reached.

Currently, China is the importer of 100 percent of Vietnam’s high-grade and fragrant rice. VFA warned that the country should export around 20-25 percent of low-grade rice because the country cannot compete with cheap rice from India and Myanmar.
