Aquatic Exports Increase over 30 Pct
Exports of Vietnamese aquatic products to the US and ASEAN markets increased by more than 30 percent in the first nine months this year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Processors (VASEP).
Although there is a decline in the European market, the VASEP says that Vietnamese enterprises have discovered other markets for exporting tra fish. Exports to the US market have seen particularly impressive growth of more than 30 percent in the first nine months of 2012, amounting to nearly US$300 million.
VASEP Vice chairman Duong Ngoc Minh, said the rising demand for tra fish in the US has led to increased exports. Minh predicted that tra fish exports to this market will continue to grow in the coming months as the increasing price of feed has caused domestic US tra fish to be less competitive than Vietnamese tra fish.
Tra fish exports to the Asian market in the third quarter of 2012 have also seen sharp increases of 30-40 percent in the ASEAN market and over 50 percent in China.
Shrimp exports to the US and EU markets in early months of this year faced difficulties, but some key markets, such as Taiwan (China), Japan, and Australia still showed rather good growth.
Vietnam exported shrimp valued at US$66 million to Australia in the first nine months of 2012, a 65 percent year-on-year increase, making Australia the fifth biggest market for Vietnamese shrimp. Shrimp exports to Japan increased 18 percent during the same period, despite the very strict low levels of Ethoxyquin food preservative it allows in shrimp products.
Vietnamese shrimp exporters have also regained a foothold in Germany, with a gradual increase in export turnover after slipping for six consecutive months. Since July, shrimp exports to the country’s biggest export market in Europe have risen 10-15 percent over the same period last year.
VASEP forecasts that there will be breakthroughs for shrimp exports in the remaining months of the year due to the growing global demand during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
