The annual Consultative Group meeting will discuss revisions to the land policy so that every Vietnamese citizen has an opportunity to enjoy the fruits of economic growth.

The theme of the discussion were announced by Victoria Kwakwa, the World Bank Country Director for Vietnam, at a press briefing ahead of the meeting scheduled to take place on December 10.

An amended land law has been under discussion at the National Assembly given the fact that flaws in the current land policy has given rise to a record number of land dispute cases in recent years.

Kwakwa said the meeting would also include a session on education and vocational skills, which are considered the two key elements that could drive Vietnam up the value chain in its transition from an agrarian economy to an industrialised nation.

The meeting is expected to see the attendance of Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung, Minister of Planning and Investment Bui Quang Vinh, representatives of international aid donors and other senior Government officials.

According to Kwakwa, the CG meeting has evolved from a platform for raising funds almost 20 years ago into a forum for constructive dialogue between the Vietnamese Government and foreign partners to work towards a common goal of uplifting Vietnam to a higher level of development.

Last year, international donors pledged to provide nearly US$7.4 billion in assistance for Vietnam to help the country implement its socio-economic development programmes.
