Defining transportation as the most important stage of infrastructure and the lifeblood of the economy, necessary to go one step ahead to meet economic development requirements in the doi moi (renovation) era, the transportation sector of Dak Lak has overcome every difficulty and challenge in the past years to achieve constant growth and development.
In the past years, the transport sector of Dak Lak province has utilised all investment sources available (central and local State budget funds, target programmes, foreign aid, public investment, etc) for transportation development. Therefore, many public transport projects have been completed and put into use to serve socioeconomic development, security and defence strategies. Dak Lak province currently has 8,812 km of roads, of which 73 percent are asphalt, concrete or cement roads. All communes have roads capable of supporting automobiles to their administrative centres. Arterial roads like Ho Chi Minh Road, National Road 27, National Road 29, National Road 26 and National Road 14C are synchronously invested and constructed. Continuous traffic networks facilitate travelling and freight circulation, thus helping improve the material and spiritual life quality of the people.
To lay the groundwork for investment attraction, the province has also invested in transport infrastructure in driving economic zones, industrial zones, tourism zones, far-lying areas, and border zones in accordance with Dak Lak socioeconomic development master plan to 2020 approved by the Prime Minister. Besides, Dak Lak focuses investment to develop Buon Ma Thuot Airport into the centre of people and cargo transportation in the Central Highlands, corresponding to its existing potential and advantages.
In addition to developing its domestic transport system, the province has taken care of developing the external transport system in Dak Lak to ensure smooth movement to other localities.
In the next phase, the transportation sector of Dak Lak province will focus all resources on building infrastructure to create breakthrough changes in transport network development. Mr Y Puat Tor, Director of Dak Lak Department of Transport, said, to serve economic development requirements in the present time and in the upcoming period, Dak Lak province will utilise all resources to develop inland, waterway and airway traffic networks, deemed its key tasks. He said the upgrading and development of transport infrastructure in the province requires a huge capital investment, while the State Budget source is limited. Therefore, Dak Lak will take advantage of centrally funded budget, proceeds from government bond sale, aid from foreign organisations, foreign loans, and capital of organisations and individuals.
Besides, the province will concentrate on upgrading and restoring district roads, urban roads and rural roads, form relatively complete transportation networks connected to Vietnam - Laos - Cambodia Development Triangle. Also, the province will coordinate with concerned agencies to build Buon Ma Thuot Airport in accordance with the plan approved by the Ministry of Transport to give a boost and accelerate the process of industrialisation and modernisation. To grasp all resources, the province encourages investment in the transport sector in various forms like BOT, BTO and BT to accelerate infrastructure development and create a synchronous, continuous transport network.
Regarding the rural transportation system, Dak Lak encourages the joint investment by both the State and people to build roads, plant roadside trees, etc.
