In recent years, thanks to the attention of the Central and local governments and efforts of local traffic authority, the traffic network of Ca Mau province has improved, contributing greatly to social and economic development of the province.
The province has 119.33 kilometres of national road, 307.8 kilometres of provincial road; over 65 out of 82 communes are accessible by car, over 3,600 kilometres of rural traffic have been built. Focal urban road networks in Ca Mau city and other towns have been continuously constructed and upgraded to facilitate transportation from Ca Mau city to the provincial coastal areas.
According to the general traffic development scheme of Ca Mau province, till 2020 and toward to 2030, the province will mainly focus to complete the large traffic road infrastructure projects with high connectivity and motivation to economic development like: Upgrading National Road number 1, 63; constructing new road to avoid the passage through Ca Mau city of National Road 1; constructing Ho Chi Minh highway to Dat Mui and the Southern coastal corridor road linking Vietnam - Cambodia and Thailand; upgrading Quan Lo Phung Hiep road with expressway standard. Provincial road network will also be constructed and upgraded to form continuous, uninterrupted traffic lines mainly toward to big economic cluster.
Together with new infrastructure investment projects, attention is also given to upgrade and maintenance activities. The province also carries out projects on upgrading provincial roads, roads to coastal economic clusters; annual maintenance and repair work to ensure traffic roads is well implemented. Besides, the province also suggests Central government’s acceleration of constructing the Ho Chi Minh highway (passage from Nam Can to Dat Mui), Southern coastal corridor road; and implements project of upgrading the National road 63, new road to avoid the passage through Ca Mau city of National Road 1, Eastern - Western coastal road.
According to Mr Huynh Quoc Viet, Director of the Provincial Transport Department, the province faces the biggest difficulty in mobilising financial resources to improve traffic network. To step by step solve this difficulty, apart from using financial support from central budget, ODA finance, the province actively appeals for any other financial resource, accelerates investment social participation to focus on road traffic network development.
Regarding the plan till 2015, the province will cooperate with investors to push up the progress of completing main projects like: Ho Chi Minh highway (passage from Nam Can - Dat Mui), Southern coastal corridor road, Bo Nam Song Doc linking to National road 1, Tac Thu - Vam Da Bac road, projects financed by World Bank’s loans (WB5); completing scheme of constructing 2,050 kilometres of rural roads to hamlet or inter-hamlets. Besides, the province will find financial resources for constructing big projects like: Ca Mau - Dam Doi road, Tac Thu - Song Doc road, U Minh - Khanh Hoi road, Lang Tram - Thoi Binh road. Mr Viet said, “In the following time, Ca Mau province hopes for Central support to upgrade National road 63, accomplish Ho Chi Minh highway (Nam Can - Dat Mui passage), and construct the Eastern - Western coastal road, road avoiding the centre of Ca Mau city; prioritise ODA finances to upgrade provincial roads. Furthermore, the province will promote appeals for investments, create preference for enterprises constructing infrastructure, so its traffic road network can be improved, making the lever to accelerate social and economic growth, tending to the target of helping Ca Mau province become an economic hub of the Mekong River Delta.
