Lam Dong province is referred to as the ‘capital’ of high-tech agriculture with thousands of businesses, farms and cooperatives applying high-tech agricultural practices to production to make breakthroughs in productivity, quality and added value of agricultural products. Phong Thuy Agricultural Production Farm is a typical example.
Phong Thuy Agricultural Production Farm, which began official operations in 1990, is one of the largest vegetable producers in Duc Trong district. Its vegetables are supplied to supermarkets like Co-op Mart and Lotte Mart. Starting from 0.4 ha of cultivated land, the farm now has more than 45 ha of production area, which harvests 3,000- 4,000 tonnes of vegetables a year. In addition, it is cooperating with other units to plant vegetables on 70 ha of land, which brings the farm’s annual output to 9,000 tonnes. All products are guaranteed beneficial, healthy and safe for consumers. Moreover, to meet the increasing market demands, all products must meet deliciousness and outlook criteria. Currently, 70 percent of products are supplied to processing plants and supermarkets and 30 percent are sold to wholesale markets.

To be qualified for demanding export markets like the EU and Japan, Phong Thuy Agricultural Production Farm has invested a handsome amount of money to modernise production, harvesting, preserving and transporting processes. Currently, Phong Thuy Farm is one of eight companies in Duc Trong district granted VietGAP certificates by the Lam Dong Department of Agriculture and Rural Development. The farm is also a VietGap pilot organic vegetable growing model carried out by Food and Agricultural Products Quality Development and Control Project (FAPQDCP) funded by the Government of Canada. The farm has more than 40 ha of VietGAP-certified farming area with 30 kinds of vegetables and fruits like tomatoes, sweet peppers, hot peppers, beans, chayote, pumpkins, cucumbers, cabbages, salad, green onions, celeries, potatoes, lemons, bananas and eggplant. A hectare generates VND2-3 billion of revenue a year. The high-tech application not only enables Phong Thuy Farm to improve productivity and output but also generates many clean, highly-valued and safe products.

Nguyen Hong Phong, Director of Phong Thuy Agricultural Production Farm, said vegetables, fruits and tubers are susceptible to disease and fungi and overused plant protection chemicals are harmful to human health. Meanwhile, vegetables, vegetables and tubers grown with high tech applications are resistant to diseases while their productivity, quality and safety is high. To apply modern farming techniques and methods effectively, Director Phong also hires foreign specialists and goes to foreign countries to study high-tech agriculture as in Thailand and Malaysia.

After more than 20 years of operation, Phong Thuy Agricultural Production Farm is siding with Lam Dong province in building high-tech agriculture and restructuring agricultural economy towards industrialisation and modernisation.
