Five Major Works to Be Built in 2005

In 2005, Vietnam will see many new works, helping to beautify the country and contribute to the achievement of socio-economic development targets. Five major works to be built in 2005 include:

1. Son La hydroelectric power plant - the biggest hydroelectric power plant in Southeast Asia

The Ministry of Industry said that the Government had planned to start the construction of the plant late this year. The plant, with a capacity of 2,400 megawatts, is capitalised at US$2.6 billion (or VND 37,000 billion). The first generator unit is expected to generate electricity in 2010 at the request of the Government (the initial schedule in 2012). In particular, the groundbreaking date of the work is the date of the anniversary of Da river flow stopping. Now, 14 corporations with more than 4,000 workers are working on the construction site.

2. Nghi Son - the biggest cement company in Vietnam with a capacity of 4.3 million tonnes per year

In late 2005, the Nghi Son Cement Company will start its construction of a second production line with a capacity of 2.15 million tonnes per year. Total investment for the project is put at US$249 million, including capital for the building of cement distribution station in Ninh Thuy, Khanh Hoa province, with a capacity of 0.5 million tonnes per year and two cement transporting ships with a total capacity of 30,000 tonnes. After its second production line is built, the Nghi Son cement plant will have a capacity of 4.3 million tonnes per year and become the biggest cement plant in Vietnam in the next five years. The building of the second production line is two years ahead the initial schedule. The production line will become operational in early 2008.

3. Vinh Tuy Bridge across the Red River

The Vinh Tuy Bridge with a total length of 5,548 metres, including 3,690 metres across the Red River is expected to receive 34,000 vehicles per day in 2010 after the completion of the construction of the Nhat Tan and Thanh Tri bridges. Total investment capital for the building of the bridge is put at about VND 4,500 billion, of which between 40 and 50 per cent will come from the State budget. The construction of the bridge will begin on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, February 3. Now, preparations for the construction are being made.

4. National highway No.70

The national highway N0 70 from Lao Cai to Doan Hung (Phu Tho) with a total length of 197 kilometres will be upgraded with four lanes to link Kunming, China, with Haiphong via the Hekou border gate. Total investment for the building for the highway is put at more than VND 5,565 billion from the Government bonds. The construction of the highway will begin in the second quarter and will be completed in late 2008.

The motorway will have a width of 140 metres, five times bigger than the existing one. The motorway with its starting point at the Hanoi suburban and the final point at the national highway N0 21 will have a total length of 29.26 kilometres. The Vinaconex Corporation (under the Ministry of Construction) is the developer of the project, capitalised at over VND 5,000 billion.
