The Vietnam National Coal - Mineral Industries Holding Corp (Vinacomin) is implementing the scheme of coal exploration in some areas of the Red River Delta's coal basin like Nam Thinh, Nam Hung in Tien Hai district, Thai Binh province. The scheme has been licensed by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to explore an area of 5.29 sq. kilometres with a depth of 1,200 metres.
The scheme covers an area of 3,500 sq. kilometres, located in the Hanoi region, stretching from Viet Tri-Phu Tho to Tien Hai-Thai Binh. The project will be implemented in two phases. In the first phase (from September 2015 to September 2017), the project will be implemented in a period of 24 months by the Vinacomin Mining Geology Co.,Ltd. In the second phase (from September 2018 to September 2019), the results from the exploration will be used to compile a geological report which will be submitted to the National Minerals Reserve Appraisal Council for approval.

The aim of the scheme is to identify stratigraphic structure, reserves, coal quality and characteristics of the geological and technical conditions of minerals, as a basis to build up a pilot mining project before scaling up the exploration in a long term.

Under the plan, the experts and technicians will take over 500 coal samples, 300 rock samples, and 240 gas samples to analyse the characteristics of coal and rock based on different criteria.

According to Mr Cao Quoc Hung, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, the project is forecast to supply about 210 billion tonnes of Abitum coal. The exploration of the coal basin of the Red River Delta by 2020, with perspective to 2030, which was approved by the Prime Minister, plays an important role to the economy. He also said that the project is also a prerequisite to open opportunities for economic development of Thai Binh province in particular and of the country in general.

Mr Nguyen Hong Dien, Chairman of Thai Binh provincial People’s Committee, said that Thai Binh is committed to directing the departments and localities of the province to create most favourable conditions to guarantee security and safety for site clearance as well as publicize all information of the project to the people. At the same time, the province will promptly remove difficulties and obstacles to effectively implement the project on schedule and ensure the environmental hygiene and ecology.

Mr Le Minh Chuan, Chairman of Vinacomin, said that it will assign tasks to the project management unit to fulfill the drilling requirements effectively and safely. Vinacomin will also coordinate with local authorities to ensure the security and reduce impacts on residential areas and lives of people in the region, timely proposing recommendations, and quickly solving the arising problems.
