In the past four years, the Environmentally and Socially Responsible Tourism Capacity Development Programme (called EU-ESRT Project) has provided effective technical assistance for the Institute for Tourism Development Research (ITDR) to operate with sustainability.
At a recent conference on EU-ESRT Project results held in Hanoi, Mr Vu Quoc Tri, Director of EU-ESRT Project, said that the EU-ESRT Project has granted a lot of support activities to ITDR for the past four years from 2012 to 2016 to boost the capacity building of the latter, aimed to make it a leading tourism research institute in the region in tourism research and planning.
EU-ESRT mainly provided working equipment, mobilised international and domestic specialists to give technical advice, and supported personnel training in Europe, training in Vietnam and professional training as well.
The most outstanding supports were technical and professional advice, including drafting tourism master plans, building long-term development plans, carrying out tourism statistics, guiding responsible tourism development policymaking and destination management.
Remarking on impacts and effects of EU-ESRT support, Dr Nguyen Anh Tuan, Director of ITDR, said that ITDR has had clear development orientations and plans. The Tourism Consulting and Training Centre has put into operation according to the model and orientation recommended by EU specialists. The competence of ITDR researchers has been enhanced and its technical infrastructure has been significantly improved.
To ensure the sustainability of EU support results, Madam Mary McKeon, Chief Advisor to EU-ESRT Project, pledged that EU-ESRT specialists will continue to work with ITDR in the ending period of the Project to hand over related results to the institute.
ITDR will have full access to EU-ESRT knowledge used to deploy new business models and to rebuild ITDR brand name in order to create a huge competitive advantage. The transfer of EU-ESRT knowledge will ensure sustainability and position the market to greatly contribute to its vision on the way to become a leading tourism research institute in the region.
