Tourism Sector Builds Occupational Skills Standards

Tourism is one of the first sectors to deploy the draft regulation on national occupational skills standards, with housekeeping operations and front office operations to be submitted to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs for official approval.

The draft national vocational skills standards on housekeeping operations and front office operations were built by the EU-funded, Environmentally & Socially Responsible Tourism Capacity Development Programme (EU-ESRT Programme) and transferred to the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) to submit to the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs.

The two sets of draft standards were restructured from the Vietnam Tourism Occupational Skills Standards (VTOS) on housekeeping operations and front office operations were developed by the Vietnam Tourism Human Resource Development Project in 2005 - 2010 and harmonised with ASEAN Common Competency Standards for Tourism Professionals (ACCSTP) Standards.

In a meeting in Hanoi on July 30, 2016, eleven members of the Jury Council of the National Occupational Skills Standards on Housekeeping Operations and ten members of the Jury Council of the National Occupational Skills Standards on Front Office Operations gave remarks to the two drafts in general, detailed contents and standard drafting processes.

These two sets of realistic standards are suitable for both tourism companies and training schools to use for enrolment, recruitment, and employee assessment. They also meet with ACCSTP.

Council members proposed the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs soon approve these two sets of standards to become national occupational skills standards, thus facilitating Vietnam to engage in ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) as defined in the Agreement on Mutual Recognition Arrangement on Tourism Professionals (MRA-TP).
