Vietnam needs some VND871.1 billion ( US$55.48 million) this year to continue carrying out infrastructure projects for maritime transport which have been implemented since the 2001-2003 period, said the Vietnam Maritime Administration (Vinamarine).
However, the department has just provided the sector with only VND283.2 billion (US$18.03 million) due to capital shortage, which will cause a big difficulty for its infrastructure construction work.
This year Vinamarine will focus on projects of building coastal communicative stations, six search and rescue vessels and upgrading Vietnam’s lighthouse system; complete projects of Cua Lo, Quy Nhon and Nha Trang ports and continue to implement the project of building a sand shield in Cua Lo port and Con Co lighthouse which were suspended in 2004 due to a lack of investment capital.
The maritime sector will also kick off important and urgent projects such as building logistic bases for search and rescue centers and dredging Cai Lan port.
To fulfill these targets, the department now advises project management boards and related units to ask for capital support from the Ministry of Transport and the government.
