EVN Strives to Supply Electricity to 95 per cent of Rural Households by 2010

The State-run Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) plans to provide electricity for all commune centers and 95 per cent of rural families across the country by 2010.

In the northern mountainous and central highlands regions, 90 per cent of rural households will gain access to power networks with outputs of over 14 billion kWh, accounting for 16.83 per cent of the total electricity consumption.

At present, EVN is coordinating with other related organizations to seek investment capital from domestic and foreign companies in an effort to supply electricity to rural and remote areas which face difficulties using alternative energy sources such as solar energy, wind power and diesel.

According to a recent report by the World Bank, access to electricity has increased rapidly among the 82-million population of Vietnam, from about 51 per cent in 1996 to more than 80 per cent at the household level in 2003, but there are still around 3.5 million households without access to electricity. Rural people often suffer from low voltage and poor reliability electricity networks.
