Cooperation in Plastic Waste Reduction in Vietnam

Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh, General Secretary of the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD), recently hosted a meeting with Ms. Kristin Hughes, Director of the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) under the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Hanoi.

At the meeting, Mr. Vinh introduced circular economy initiatives launched by VCCI-VBCSD, including zero waste to nature (ZWTN) and the Vietnam Materials Marketplace.

He said, the circular economy that VCCI is cooperating with enterprises to carry out targets such as addressing plastic waste problems; building a roadmap to formulate and promote sustainable business models; developing value chains towards circular economy; proposing policies to facilitate the deployment of circular economy in Vietnam.

He added that many big businesses have joined this program, including Coca Cola and Heineken. This shows that many businesses are very interested in sustainable development activities, especially plastic waste reduction.

Ms. Kristin Hughes said, with VCCI’s experience, WEF expects to engage VCCI, as a representative and bridge for the business community in the Global Plastic Action Partnership in Vietnam, as co-chair.

The Global Plastic Action Partnership in Vietnam is currently being implemented by the WEF and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MONRE). The program aims to share regional and international information and experiences, raise community awareness and propose solutions to minimize harmful effects of plastic waste on natural resources, environment and human health and address harmful effects of plastic waste.

At the end of the meeting, the two sides agreed to extend connectivity and cooperation in the future.
