Vietnam Ranks World's Fourth Largest Seafood Exporter to US
Vietnamese seafood exporters shipped seafood products worth $72 million to the US market in the first month of this year, becoming the world’s fourth largest seafood exporter to the country, according to the Trade Ministry on March 21.
Vietnamese seafood products accounted for 7.2% of the US market share in the first month of this year, the ministry said, adding that it imported seafood worth $994 million during January.
In January, Thailand was still the world’s largest seafood exporter to the US with $145 million, accounting for 14.6% of its market share, followed by China with $137 million and 13.8%, Canada $116 million (11.7%), Chile $66 million (6.6%), Indonesia $63 million (6.3%), Ecuador $44 million and Russia $31 million.
The ministry said that the values and volumes of Vietnamese seafood products to the US are growing after being seriously affected by the US anti-dumping shrimp lawsuit. “The US market is still Vietnam’s major consumer of shrimp products, which is the main seafood exported,” it said.
To increase export value from the US market, the Trade Council Office in the US advised local exporters to boost the shipment of processed seafood, especially shrimp products, to diversify seafood products and to focus on trade promotion.
