Chu Lai Airport Receives First Commercial Flight

A commercial plane landed in Chu Lai airport in the central province of Quang Nam on March 22, bringing the first passengers from Ho Chi Minh City to an area expected to witness an economic and tourism boom in the near future.

The first flights transported around 60 passengers on the French-made 65-seat ATR 72 aircraft from Vietnam Airlines.

From March 28, the route will have two flights per week on Mondays and Thursdays. A new route linking Chu Lai and Vietnam’s capital Hanoi is also expected to open in the near future

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Chairman of Vietnam National Assembly Truong Quang Duoc said that Chu Lai airport held a special place in the development strategy of the region and the country.

“The airport will be appropriately upgraded to become a cargo and trade goods transport hub for Vietnam and South East Asia,” he added.

Covering an area of 2,300 ha, the airport hopes to annually transport 4.1 million passengers and 4.5 tons of cargo by 2020.
