Vina-Mobi to Roll out First Made-in-Vietnam Cellphones Shortly

Vina-Mobi Joint Stock Co. (VMF) is expected to introduce its first made-in-Vietnam cellphones onto the local market in December this year. With a price of between VND1 and VND1.5 million for a unit, VMF hopes to sell its products throughout the country.

“We have chosen the Southern Telecoms Equipment Co. as our distributor in southern Vietnam and the Northern Telecoms Equipment Co. as the distributor in the north,” said VMF director Le Quang Hoa.

“VMF is also negotiating with foreign partners over exporting its CDMA cellphones to South Korea, Japan and Taiwan,” Hoa said.

VMF’s cellphone factory is located in the central city of Danang. It has total investment capital of US$25 million, with Vietnamese partners holding 65 per cent and Japan’s Zentek Co. holding the remaining 35 per cent.

The factory has an initial designed capacity of turning out 300,000 cellphones a year, which will be raised to one million units a year after three years of operations. It will export 30 per cent of its output.
