Vietnam to Boost Textile Sales to Japan

Vietnamese textile producers have a good opportunity to boost exports to Japan as Japanese importers have recently been eyeing Vietnam as a replacement to China, according to industry experts.

As of May, many Japanese garment importers can move their orders from China to Vietnam, according to the HCM City Textile and Knitting Association.

Vietnam’s ability to enhance export textiles and garments to Japan is very optimistic because the country may enjoy benefits when becoming an official WTO member and be removed of quotas under the ATC agreement.

Then, Chinese textile exporters will not concentrate much on the demanding Japanese market with small-scale orders and many Japanese textile importers will turn their attention to Vietnamese suppliers.

Vietnam’s textile exports to Japan can surge past US$1 billion if it is able to get one-tenth of the total orders that Japan gets from Chinese producers, experts said.

Vietnamese textile producers should make proper preparations in case it receives news from the Japanese market, said Le Quoc An, chairman of Vietnam Textiles and Apparel Association (Vitas).

He said Vitas was going to organize a trade promotion seminar in Japan soon to boost textile sales to the lucrative market.

Japan is one of Vietnam's largest export markets, but its textile sales to the Eastern Asian country are still modest. In the first quarter of this year, Vietnam’s textile exports to Japan hit just US$135 million, up only 4 per cent on-year.
