Vietnam Expects 7.3Mln Mobile Phone Subscribers by Year-end

 

The total number of cell phone subscribers in Vietnam is likely to reach 7.3 million by the end of this year and 21 million by 2008, according to a telecoms market researcher.

 

Currently, there are nearly six million cellphone subscribers in the country.

 

Market researcher BMI Group recently reported that Vietnam's mobile information market had been developing rapidly, recording a growth rate of 65 per cent in 2004.

 

Vietnam now has 11.34 million telephone subscribers or 13.83 phones for every 100 residents, according to the Vietnam Post & Telecoms Corp. (VNPT). Of the total number of telephone subscribers, VNPT accounts for 94.54 per cent and other telecom companies account for the remaining 5.46 per cent.

 

The Ministry of Post & Telecoms forecasts that Vietnam will sign up around 4 million new phone subscribers this year, with 3.2 million of them being mobile subscribers and 800,000 landline subscribers. Tele-density will exceed 18 phones for every 100 residents by 2010.

 

Vietnam now has six cellphone carriers, including three GSM-based networks and three CDMA-based networks.
