Hai Van Tunnel Boosts Economic Development

In the past, one major question was always where to invest, North or South of Hai Van pass? In the North, Phu Loc was most favourable for development of aquaculture and tourism. In the South, Da Nang City was most attractive for development of urban areas and industrial zones. But the two parts were totally isolated from each other by the Hai Van pass.

Now with the Hai Van tunnel, the two parts are not only closer but complement each other in socio-economic development. Mr Duong Thanh Thi, Chairman of Lien Chieu People’s Committee (Da Nang) said that the tunnel has greatly facilitated the economic development of his district to the Northern part: entrepreneurs can cross the mountain range and administrative boundary to invest in Lang Co, Phu Loc.

Since 2004, technical infrastructure has been developed on both ends of the tunnel: Hoa Khanh, Lien Chieu industrial zones and Hoa Khanh market place were built; private enterprises mushroomed in the region developing industry and service.

The tunnel has shortened the travel between the two parts by several hours. Da Nang city can expand investment to Thua Thien Hue. Lang Co beach can link with Da Nang bay and Hoi An ancient town. The resorts built along the beach will make coastal tourism more attractive.

Indeed, the tunnel has changed the conditions of the two parts and promises bright prospects for socio-economic development in Central Vietnam.
