Vietnamese Footwear Likely to Face Dumping Lawsuit in EU

Vietnamese footwear makers may be sued for dumping footwear products in the EU market, said a trade representative of the European Commission at a press conference in Hanoi yesterday.

The conference was held during the EC’s working visit to Hanoi to discuss the possibility to grant the market economy status to Vietnam.

The EU now has a plan to hold talks with Vietnamese authorities to find out the actual export volume of Vietnamese footwear products to the EU. The export volume given by the EU is higher than the figure provided by Vietnam.

According to an official from the Ministry of Trade, Vietnamese exporters have been warned about the possibility of being sued for dumping their products in the EU. If Vietnamese footwear products make up over 3 per cent of the EU footwear market, the dumping lawsuit is very likely.

Developing countries such as Vietnam are the main targets of antidumping actions, trade experts said.

In 10 years from 1994 to 2004, a total of 18 actions were initiated against Vietnam, eight of which led to the imposition of extra tariffs.
