- An Interview with Mrs. Laurie Gillow - Director of International Corporate Development, ACCA (The Association of Chartered Certified Accountants – ACCA)
Could you please give your evaluations on the Vietnam’s auditing profession as well as the quality of Vietnam’s auditors presently?
Vietnam’s auditors are increasingly helping to meet the needs of national stakeholders who rely on their professional skills. They are quickly developing skills; partly through studying for professional qualifications such as ACCA’s as well through the work they are undertaking for international audit firms and multinational companies with offices or regional headquarters in the country.
In your opinion, what further steps should Vietnam take to strengthen the Auditing profession?
Like many countries, there is a need for Vietnam to ensure that there is adoption of - and compliance with - international accounting and auditing standards. With an increasingly global marketplace, users of audited accounts want to be able to compare results in the same ‘financial language’. With such important markets as Europe working to converge their standards with international standards, it is important that Vietnam is at the forefront of the adoption of international best practice.
Do you have any comments on training human resource for Vietnam’s Auditing industry? What are the advantages that ACCA bring to the Auditing of Vietnam and what are the advantages of ACCA’s certificate over those of other international auditing organizations?
The ACCA qualification, besides being one which is globally recognized, is also more flexible and adaptable than many other qualifications, and enables Vietnamese accountancy students and members to study and gain vital skills to meet the requirements of Vietnamese businesses and regulators.
A major benefit of the ACCA qualification is that with its philosophy of open access, young people who have not had a university level education, but who have ability and are prepared to work hard are able to qualify as professional accountants and gain a qualification, which opens the door to a career with considerable potential.
Could you please let us know the highlights of ACCA’s upcoming activities in Vietnam?
Improving our service to ACCA students, members and employers is still our first priority. ACCA will continue our consultation meetings with these key stakeholders to get their feedback on our services to ensure that our international standards can meet the local environment. The collaboration with the universities can provide more opportunities to the young Vietnamese, so working with the Universities such as National Economic University, Economic University of HCMC, Swinburne University, etc. will be in a new development. Besides, we will continue our involvement with the development of local profession, including provision of resources to MoF for the issuance of new legislation, to SAV on issues of the public sector, as well as supporting the professional bodies in the activities such as joint CPD events with VAA and VACPA, seminars, joint media arrangements, etc.
