SCG Member Companies Continue to Be in Top 100 Sustainable Companies in Vietnam

Two member companies of SCG namely Vina Kraft Paper Co., Ltd.  (VKPC) and SCG Concrete Roof (CRVC) have been awarded the Top 100 Sustainable Companies in 2022.

The recognition was based on Programme on Benchmarking and Announcing Sustainable Companies in Vietnam (CSI Programme) by Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development (VBCSD) under Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI) in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, and the General Confederation of Labor.

The awards were unveiled at the ceremony announcing the Sustainable Companies in 2022 by the Vietnam Business Council for Sustainable Development and the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry on December 1.

VKPC, manufacturing base for packaging paper, is one of the companies in SCGP, a core business of SCG, focuses on creating innovations and values to serve the evolving consumer demands while placing emphasis on environmental, social and governance (ESG) aspects. Accordingly, VKPC has been lauded as only of the typical business on Gender Equality in the Workplace for two consecutive years. This represents the vision of “leaving no one behind” in a sustainable business corporate culture, being inclusive in serving various communities in the society. While improving gender equality in the workplace contributes significantly to labor productivity, talent attraction; respecting children’s rights will help build stronger communities, creating a sustainable future for both the corporate and their stakeholders.

Meanwhile, CRVC has been named in the list of the Top 100 Sustainable Companies for 4 consecutive years. To achieve this recognition, CRVC has adhered closely to the ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) principles. The company has adopted their international standards for its management systems including ISO 9001:2015 (Quality Management), ISO 14001:2015 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001:2018 (Occupational health and safety Management).

As the leading sustainable conglomerate in ASEAN, SCG strives for the better lives of today and to transcend an even better world to the next generations. Aiming to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals through conducting business with an ESG strategy in a balanced approach, in line with its promised “Passion for Better.”, the strategy has not only been manifested at the corporate level but also cascaded to the wide network of its subsidiaries, so that good practices can be expanded.

With 130 indicators, the CSI 2022 Index is divided into five components, based on the revised Labor Law 2019, the 2014 Environmental Law and a number of provisions in the 2020 revised Environmental Law related to commitments on climate change adaptation and voluntary national commitments COP21 and COP26, sustainability reporting standards GRI and ESG, ISO 26000 social responsibility standards and trade commitments in new generation bilateral and multilateral trade agreements.

In terms of environment standards, SCG’s member companies always orient their business toward sustainable best practices and become role models in their respective business. For instance, with the notion of restoration to reduce all negative impacts of production activities on the environment, ecosystem and human health, VKPC was among the first to apply Circular Economy principles in the packaging industry production process, including a recycled water treatment system to reduce the amount of fresh water consumption, and use biomass to reduce fossil fuels consumption. In addition, VKPC also recovers methane from the Wastewater treatment system in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as upcycles fly ash from the boiler turns to raw materials to produce construction bricks.

Regarding business recovery for the post-pandemic period and setting a long-term goal in the future, SCG is one of the corporations in the world that commit to reducing GHG emissions to Net Zero by 2050. Accordingly, SCG has constructed and implemented a detailed plan with realistic milestones toward not adding to the total amount of greenhouse gases released into the atmosphere by the year of 2050 to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. This plan will facilitate SCG’s innovation and operation in all of its worldwide activities in the years to come as one of the leading conglomerates in the region, especially in sustainable development.
