SCG: Pioneers ESG Trends in Vietnam

ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) has become a guideline in the operating process of many businesses.

Spreading a green, environmentally friendly lifestyle

SCG continuously implemented environmental initiatives in 2022. SCG collaborated with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to organize a "Kick-off Conference on National Action Plan on Circular Economy 2022”, clearly demonstrating its efforts to cooperate with public-private organizations to implement many projects in the field of circular economy, aiming for net-zero emissions by 2050.

SCG also makes environmental initiatives more realistic for the young generation. Some of its typical initiatives include the ESG Camp in Can Gio, Ho Chi Minh City, helping young people better understand and thereby offer solutions to help protect the Earth; the "ESG Idea Pitching - Hacks to heal our planet" contest to raise awareness of environmental challenges; and SCGP’s contest on sustainable packaging design for students.

SCG itself applied the "Green Meeting" initiative and the exhibition 'made from paper'. The recycled paper is used to make backdrops, podiums, tables and chairs, and decorative objects, and then recycled into bookshelves for children.

As a trailblazer, SCG and its member companies have been joining hands with the locality to build a living environment. In Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, where the key project is based, in August 2022, SCG and SCGC - Chemical business and Long Son Petrochemical Company Limited (LSP) cooperated with the People's Committee of Vung Tau city to plant 400 trees, equivalent to 3.26 hectares of forest in Big Mountain (Vung Tau city), contributing to the goal of making Vung Tau a green city.

Strengthening social responsibility, improving the quality of life

At SCG, social responsibility is an integral part of business operations. The flagship program, SCG Sharing The Dream scholarship, with the theme "Sustainable Future Starts From Your Dreams” in 2022, has awarded VND1.5 billion and organized a series of activities to equip more than 100 students across the country with sustainable thinking. During the 15-year journey, the scholarship has empowered more than 5,000 students, motivating young people to achieve their dreams. In addition, SCG has cooperated with Ba Ria-Vung Tau province to award five billion scholarships during the past five years.

In terms of health care, SCG has also cooperated with Ba Ria-Vung Tau Eye Hospital and Ba Ria-Vung Tau Youth Union to implement the program "Sharing a Brighter Vision 2022", providing free eye examination for 600 local people, successfully operating on 100 cataract patients and organizing eye-care training sessions. In addition, SCG and the Binh Duong provincial government inaugurated the "SCG Outdoor Gym" in An Phu ward, Thuan An city, providing a multi-purpose green space, and promoting a healthy lifestyle.

SCG also organizes International Children's Day and back-to-school day annually at the Ba Ria-Vung Tau School for Disabled Children; hands over trees and waste sorting bins to schools; and awards scholarships and many gifts to students, teachers and officers.

Completing production process, and transparent governance model being recognized

In November 2022, SCG Chemicals' member company (SCGC - SCG's Chemical business) Long Son Petrochemical Company Limited (LSP) inaugurated and put into operation the first key items at the Long Son Petrochemicals Complex. The event creates momentum for the petrochemical industry in Vietnam.

SCG and its member companies have achieved many prestigious awards. Specifically, in 2022, two-member companies, Vina Kraft Paper Co., Ltd. (VKPC) and SCG Concrete Roof (Vietnam) Company Limited (CRVC) were honored in the list of top 100 sustainable enterprises in Vietnam by VCCI’s Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI) Program. Besides, VKPC was also recognized for Gender Equality in the workplace for two consecutive years.

SCG was honored in the top 50 typical FDI enterprises in Vietnam in 2021-2022 at the 21st Golden Dragon Award Ceremony, and won the title "ESG Pioneer enterprise in Vietnam" at the Golden Dragon Awards in 2022-2023.

With its initiatives, programs, and achievements in pursuing ESG strategy, SCG is pioneering in promoting sustainable development, creating motivation for businesses in many different fields.
