Deputy PM Receives Visiting WB Vice President
Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung received Michael Kein, Vice President for Private Economic Sector Development of the World Bank (WB), Chief Economist of the International Finance Corporation (IFC) on November 7 during his working visit to Vietnam.
On behalf of the Government, Deputy PM Dung welcomed the WB official on his visit to Vietnam. He informed his guest of the achievements in the co-operation between Vietnam and the WB over the recent years as well as the important progress that Vietnam has made after 20 years of change.
The achievements mentioned in their talks included Vietnam’s economic growth, excellent performance in poverty reduction and hunger elimination, remarkable administrative reforms and improvement of the investment environment.
Deputy PM Dung expressed his hope that the WB and IFC will continue sharing with Vietnam their experiences in addressing urgent problems concerning traffic in urban areas, electricity production, reforms of public administration and state-owned enterprises. Tax and other financial support projects and programs, also need further assistance along with technical assistance for small and medium-sized enterprises.
For his part, the WB Vice President praised Vietnam's economic achievements, especially the achievements in bettering the investment and trading environment. He also pledged the WB’s further co-operation with Vietnam in enterprise equitization and project implementation.
Dr. Michael Klein, Vice President for Private Sector Development of the World Bank and International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Chief Economist of the IFC has praised Vietnam as one of the countries that have conducted the most successful reform of its business and investment environment.
Since reengaging in Vietnam in 1993, WB has already disbursed over US$2.7 billion for agriculture, infrastructure, health programs, schools, and other essential needs. It has also pledged to provide Vietnam with US$5.3 billion for the country’s development to date.
