US Acting Deputy Secretary of Commerce David Sampson will pay a visit to Vietnam from November 17 to 18 to work with Vietnamese authorities over bilateral trade and economic relations, including WTO related issues, the US Embassy in Hanoi has announced.

The visit takes place at a time when there are big hurdles in their bilateral talks over Vietnam’s bid to enter the WTO as well as many other differences between the two countries in human right and religious issues.

During the trip, the US senior is scheduled to held working sessions with Vietnamese officials from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Investment & Planning. Further details about the visit, however, are not made available yet.

Vietnam and the US posted bilateral trade of almost US$6.5 billion in 2004. The US is now Vietnam’s largest overseas market, purchasing one-fifth of all Vietnamese exports, however, Vietnam ranks as only the US’s 57th largest overseas market.
