Phu My 2.2 Power Plant Inaugurated
The Phu My 2.2 power plant in southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau province has become operational from October 21, 2005, marking a important progress for Vietnam’s electricity sector when the country is facing an annual increasing electricity demand of 15 per cent in 2004-2010.
The power plant was built with an investment of US$480 million, of which Electrictite de France (EDF) contributed 56.25 per cent and two Japanese companies, SUMITOMO (28.125 per cent) and TEPCO (15.625 per cent) the other majority proportions.
The power plant will help the country offset a severe power crunch forecast for 2006 due to an expected drought and soaring demand, which has led Hanoi to plan for around 60 additional plants by 2020.
Phu My 2.2 is part of the giant 3,815 megawatt Phu My complex including the 1,090MW Phu My 1 Plant mainly funded by JBIC, 860MW Phu My 2.1 Plant invested by Electricity of Vietnam (EVN), 720MW Phu My 3 Plant developed by BOT British Petroleum and the 430MW Phu My 4 Plant invested by EVN. These plants take natural gas from the Nam Con Son Basin in waters off southeastern Vietnam.
The project has an operational life of 20 years and will be handled by the French state-owned EDF to the Vietnamese government under a build-operate-transfer contract signed in 1999.
