State-owned Electricity of Vietnam (EVN) has submitted a new electricity price scheme for the 2006-2008 period to the Ministry of Industry (MoI) for consideration before it is submitted to the government for approval in the coming time, local media said.

Under the new scheme, the retailed prices of electricity will be at least VND898 per kWh (excluding the value-added tax (VAT) next year, up around 14.8 per cent as compared with the current price of VND782 per kWh.

According to EVN, the move is aimed to ensure the financial balance and attract investment capital into the electricity sector.

The corporation suggested keeping unchanged prices of electricity for production and keeping unchanged or slightly increasing for the first 100kWh of electricity serving the daily life of local people.

EVN said the price of electricity sold for the production sector in Vietnam is currently higher than the price of power serving daily life of local people. The situation is completely different from other countries, so it has not really encouraged producers, adding that power prices (excluding VAT) in Vietnam is lower than in other nations in the region.
