EU Orders Rise for Vietnamese Seafood

EU orders for Vietnamese seafood have increased dramatically as of early October, according to the European Department under the Ministry of Trade.

The rocketing demand for seafood had been fueled by the spread of bird flu in Europe, forcing the Europeans to consume more seafood as an alternative to poultry, causing a 10-15 per cent drop in the need for poultry.

In addition, the European importers often order seafood in large quantities at the year’s end to serve Christmas and New Year.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), shrimp, basa catfish, and ready-made seafood products are European importers’ favored items.

The association also reported that seafood revenue for the past eleven months hit USUS$2.5 billion, realizing 99.4 per cent of the annual plan and representing an on-year rise of 14.7 per cent.

At this pace, the country is likely to reach the target of USUS$2.6 billion for seafood export turnover in 2005 despite market-related difficulties, the VASEP added.

To this end, Vietnam is enhancing its capacity of forecasting seafood prices and export demand, and penetrating more deeply into the Middle East, East Europe, Africa and South America.
