Top Ten Events in Vietnam in 2005

Vietnam News Agency (VNA) has selected the top ten events in Vietnam in 2005, among which, the successful organisation of major events of the country has contributed to raising the Vietnamese people’s patriotic and revolutionary traditions and pride.
Following are the top ten events selected by VNA:
1/ The successful organisation of major events of the country, including the Hung Kings’ death anniversary, 75th anniversary of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the 30th Liberation Day of the South, the 115th birthday of President Ho Chi Minh, the 60th anniversary of the August Revolution and the 60th National Day, September 2.
 
2/ Overcoming many difficulties and challenges, Vietnam gained an economic growth rate of 8.4 per cent, which is the five year highest figure, making a contribution to the successful implementation of the State’s socio-economic development plans and targets in five years, 2001-2005.
 
3/ Vietnam continued to expand its external relations with the visit to France by Party General Secretary Nong Duc MMáºnh, the visit to China by State President Tran Duc Luong, the first official visit to the US by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and the visit to Vietnam by the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, and President of China Hu Jintao, and the signing of the Supplementary Treaty to the 1985 Vietnam-Cambodia Treaty on Delimitation.
 
4/ Vietnam achieved the targets of the UN’s Millennium Development Goals ahead the schedule by reducing by 50 per cent of the number of poor and hungry households and promoting the universalisation of primary education. Vietnam’s achievements were highly praised at the United Nations General Assembly Summit in September 2005.
 
5/ The Party congresses at all levels towards the forthcoming tenth National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, which were important political activities of the whole Party, the whole people and the whole army, were held in the spirit of expanded democracy and developed intellect of cadres, Party members and the people.
 
6/ The eighth session of the 11th National Assembly approved the Law on Practising Thrift and
Combating Waste, and the Anti-corruption Law. This was an expression of the Party and State’s determination to fight practices which are damaging to society and the economy.
 
7/ The introduction of two diaries by fallen combatants Dang Thuy Tram and Nguyen Ven Thac helped educate Vietnamese young people of the revolutionary traditions and ideals, thus contributing to developing historical and glorious traditions of the anti-US resistance war during the national defence and construction. The two diaries set a record in the number of copies in circulation.
 
8/ Natural disasters and unexpected development of climatic conditions, including droughts, floods and storms, caused severe damage in the north and the central coastal region. However, with good preparations, the human and asset losses were minimised.
 
9/ Corruption and other illegal activities were uncovered at the Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation. Also, a quota solicitation ring, a fake electricity meter case, an State-owned asset embezzlement of construction projects, an defraudation case of Nguyen Duc Chi in the Rusalka project in Khanh Hoa, and Trinh Nguyen Thuy-led heroin processing and trading ring, a gambling and gambling organisation case of under-23 players at the 23rd SEA Games, and bribery taking and offering of football referees were brought to light.
 

10/ On November 25, 2005, UNESCO recognised the culture of cong and chieng (gongs) as intangible cultural heritages. This is the second intangible cultural heritage of Vietnam, after the Hue Royal Chamber Music was recognised.
