Vietnam’s leather and footwear industry has set a target of obtaining US$3.7 billion from the exports of footwear products this year, up 34.48 per cent against 2004, State media said.

Of the total export revenues, US$3.35 billion is expected to come from selling 470 million pairs of shoes and slippers abroad and the remainder is to come from other leather-made products.

The Vietnam Leather & Footwear Association is urging local enterprises to focus on human resources development, infrastructure upgrade, equipment renewal, materials and accessories production, and trade mark building, in order to meet the target.

In 2005, due to difficulties in export market, especially bad impacts of the EU’s dumping lawsuit, the industry’s export earnings was nearly US$3 billion, up 13.4 per cent over 2004 but lower than the initial target of US$3.2 billion for 2005.

The European Union (EU) market accounted for over 65 per cent of Vietnam's footwear exports.
