Vietnam is estimated to need VND60 trillion (US$3.8 billion) to develop its seaport system by 2010, according to the Ministry of Transport.

Of the sum, the northern region will need over VND20.57 trillion (US$1.3 billion), the central region VND14.21 billion (US$893.73 million) and the southern region VND22.2 trillion (US$1.4 billion).

To have sufficient money for the development, the Vietnamese maritime sector needs to mobilize capital from various sources, including official development assistance (ODA) sources, it said.

Under the seaport development master plan ratified by the government, investment will be prioritized for projects to expand the Haiphong and Cai Lan ports and build the Lach Huyen Port in the north, upgrade Cua Lo, Nghi Son, Vung Ang, Chan May, Danang, Quy Nhon, Ba Ngoi, Nha Trang, Dung Quat and Ky Ha in the central region, and Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai and Ba Ria-Vung Tau seaport complexes in the south.

By 2010, cargo passing via Vietnamese seaports will reach 265 million tons, said the ministry. In 2004, 127.67 million tons of commodities were transported via Vietnamese seaports, up 11.96 per cent on year. Vietnam now has 119 seaports.
