The Vietnam Trade Promotion Agency (Vietrade) under the Ministry of Trade (MoT) has announced the list of ten companies that spent the largest sums on sales promotion in the past year, with half of them being beverage producers.
These ten companies poured a total of VND121.7 billion (US$7.61 million) into such campaigns in the year, the agency reported.
The Vietnam Brewery Joint Venture led the way in promotional activities, spending VND54.7 billion (US$3.42 million), followed by Coca Cola and TCL Electronics who spent VND18.9 billion (US$1.18 million) and VND11.6 billion (US$725,000), respectively
Also in the top 10 are PepsiCo Vietnam (VND8.4 billion), Unilever Bestfood & Elida P/S (VND5.6 billion), IBD Joint Venture (VND4.8 billion), the Tan Hiep Phat Trading and Service Company (VND4.75 billion), the Hue Brewery Company (VND4.7 billion), the Hanoi Milk Plant (VND4.13 billion) and Sacombank (VND4 billion).
Vietrade said it approved 310 applications for promotional campaigns totaling hundreds of billions dong in 2005.
Also according to Vietrade, 163 trade fairs and exhibitions were held in Vietnam throughout this year. Among them were big fairs such as the Expo 2005 in Hanoi, which housed 700 booths and encouraged the signing of contracts totaling US$300 million and the Wooden Products Trade Fair in Ho Chi Minh City, which hosted 600 booths and netted US$24.9 million in contracts.
According to Ngo Van Thoan, head of Vietrade, many more enterprises attempted to register to organize trade fairs, but the demand was simply too great. He said that Vietrade and the local trade departments will take action to improve the situation.
A total of 225 trade fairs are expected to be held in the country in 2006, Vietrade said at a conference on the national trade promotion program for the 2006-2010 period held in Hanoi on December 27.
