An official of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development revealed that in 2005, export turnover of Vietnamese vegetables and fruits is estimated to reach US$235 million, up 31.3 per cent over 2004. Vietnamese vegetables and fruits are exported to 50 countries in which China is still the largest market, accounting for 42 per cent of the total turnover, followed by Singapore and Taiwan. Some markets imported larger quantities than those in 2004 such as France, Russia, Korea, Japan…with an increase from 40 to 57 per cent.

According to specialists’ assessments, however, export of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables has not been sustainable due to big losses after harvest, high cost of transportation and limited processing and preservation technology, affecting the quality of fruit and vegetableS.
