The Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem has recently signed a decision to build standards for exhaust fumes discharged by automobiles in big cities nationwide, tightening regulations on the issue in order to protect the environment.

The decision will take effect from July 1, 2006.

Accordingly, all automobiles with registered number plates belonging to five Class 1 cities including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Haiphong, Danang and Can Tho must comply with exhaust fume standards level 1 under the Government’s Decision No. 249 issued in 2005.

For gasoline-powered engines, the maximum level for exhaust fumes will be 4.5 CO, 1,200 ppm will be maximized for four-stroke engines, 7,800 ppm for two-stroke engines and 3,300 ppm for engines with special structures.

In the case of diesel-powered engines, the maximum acceptable level for exhaust fumes will be 72 per cent HSU.

Any car failing to meet the mentioned standards will not receive an environmental-friendly certificate issued by authorized registration stations.

Meanwhile, automobiles registered in other localities are required to follow the standards from July 1, 2008.

At presents, Vietnam has over 850,000 automobiles and over 16 million motorbikes.
