Viet Nam-China Relations Should Comply with UN Charter: Joint Statement

Viet Nam and China have agreed that their relations should comply with the UN Charter, international law and fundamental standards of international relations, according to a Joint Statement issued following Chinese Premier Li Qiang's three-day official visit to Viet Nam.

Both sides agreed to consistently adhere to mutual respect, equality, win-win cooperation, respect for each other's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and settlement of differences through peaceful measures.

Both sides sincerely and frankly exchanged views on maritime issue, underscoring the need to better control and actively settle differences at sea, maintain peace and stability in the East Sea and the region.

The two sides agreed to abide by the common perceptions reached by senior leaders of the two Parties and the two countries through friendly consultations and seeking fundamental and long-term solutions in accordance with the Agreement on basic principles guiding the settlement of sea-related issues between Viet Nam and China, international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The two countries agreed to take no actions that complicate the situation or expand disputes and work together to maintain stability at sea.

Both sides also agreed to continue comprehensive and effective implementation of the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea, and soon reach a practical and effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea that is in line with international law, including the 1982 UNCLOS.

During his first official visit to Viet Nam from October 12-14, Premier Li Qiang met with General Secretary and President To Lam, held talks with Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, met with Chairman of the National Assembly Tran Thanh Man, and co-chaired the Viet Nam-China Business Forum. 

In the atmosphere of sincerity and friendship, both sides had in-depth exchanges of views and reached common perceptions on promoting the development of the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership and the building of a community with a shared future having strategic significance between Viet Nam and China, as well as regional and international issues of common concern.
