Int'l Seafood Trade Fair Opens in HCM City

Ho Chi Minh City opened the international seafood trade fair or Vinafish 2006 on April 1, luring the participation of more than 50 domestic and foreign enterprises, according to the fair organizers.
 
The “Vinafish 2006”, which was co-held by the Ministry of Fisheries, the HCM City People’s Committee and Vietnam Association for Fisheries, aims at boosting local aquaculture industries.
 
At the fair, many fish related products have been made available, including biologically finished products, aquatic feeds, seafood products and especially various kinds of ornamental fishes which were displayed at Ho Chi Minh Ornamental Fish Association’s Booth.
 
During the fair, many other activities like seminars on aquaculture and aquatic products fishing, introducing new standards of food safety and some new European fishing technology and honors giving ceremonies have also been held, making the exhibition an attractive and eventful one.     
 
In other news, Vietnam is estimated to gain US$532 million from seafood exports in the first three months of this year, up 7.1 per cent against the same period last year, according to the Government Statistics Office.
 
The country has so far this year yielded as many as 828,000 tons of aquatic products, of which 543,500 tons were from exploitation while the remainder was harvested from aquaculture farms nationwide, up 6.3 per cent, 3.1 per cent, and 12.9 per cent, consecutively.
